Biomechanical Cycling Analysis

Professional Bike Fitting

Although bicycles are designed as perfectly symmetrical pieces of equipment, our bodies are not so perfect and are more often than not, asymmetric. To get the most out of your bike it is important that it is adjusted to allow for you individual asymmetries. We offer professional bike fitting to improve the comfort and performance of your riding. All bike fitting is undertaken by specialist physiotherapists with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics.

We offer professional bike fitting to improve the comfort and performance of your riding. All bike fitting is undertaken by specialist physiotherapists ysiotherapists with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics.

The aim of a professional bike fit is to optimise riding performance which results in:

  • Improved Power Output
  • Greater Efficiency
  • Reduced Injury Risk

What is involved with the analysis?

Our biomechanical cycling analysis is physiotherapy led and comprehensive. As part of the analysis you will undergo a physiotherapy analysis, professional bike-fit and functional movement analysis.

01

Athlete Cyclist performance measured by sensory equipment

01 Physiotherapy analysis

Initially, your Physiotherapist will complete an analysis. Within this analysis they will screen for any potential injury risks, along with strength, range of movement and various other testing procedures. This will provide your physiotherapist with an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses before you even get on the bike.

02 Bike-fit

During the bike-fit your Physiotherapist will assess you in your current set-up. To do this they will use a high-speed digital camera to film you from multiple angles as you ride and will analyse your set up using specialised software. Your will be assessed from head-to-toe, measuring several joint angles and body postures to identify both the good and not so good aspects of your riding position.

Your physiotherapist will be able to identify what aspects of your bike set up could be adjusted in order to optimise your riding position and your performance. Very minor changes can transform how you ride the bike and really help you maximise your performance.

What we assess

During your bike-fit your physiotherapist will analyse how your body moves on your bike. Several different important aspects will be analysed:

Cyclist receiving personal training from triathlete coach
Cyclist receiving personal training from triathlete coach

Functional Movement analysis (FMA)

In order to further assess your strength and the efficiency of your movements your Physiotherapist will complete a functional movement analysis with you.

In a FMA an individual performs a series of body movements that incorporate ‘functional’ movements e.g. a squat. The aim of the FMA is to:

01

Sports Scientist monitoring Athlete runner on treadmill

01 Strength and Conditioning Programme

Following your bike-fit, your physiotherapist will provide you will a bespoke training programme to help you maximise your performance, or if you are currently injured, help you rehabilitate and reduce the risk of future injury.

In order to create a bespoke training programme your Physiotherapist will draw upon the findings of your physiotherapy analysis, bike-fit and FMA to formulate a programme to target your specific weaknesses. These exercises will be provided to you on a printed exercise programme.
