What is video analysis for runners By Roberta Cardoso

What is video analysis for runners?

Video analysis is the video recording of movement using a slow-motion camera. The slow-motion camera can take a large number of frames per second, which allows us to slow down and watch fast movements, like running, very clearly without the picture distorting. This allows us to examine your running technique in great depth and provide you with slow-motion, real-time feedback of your running biomechanics.

Why do I need this?

Being able to analyse your biomechanics in slow-motion whilst you are running, allows us to watch single joint movement during each phase of your gait cycle. With our extensive knowledge of biomechanics and use of up-to-date research, we can evaluate the efficiency of your movement and running technique and compare it to professional athletes. As physiotherapists, we will also be able to look for and identify any ‘abnormal’ movement patterns in your running technique that may predispose you to injury.

Can you not just do this by watching me run down the road?

This is possible, but unless there is a very obvious abnormality in your technique, it’s very difficult to pick up the small errors during movement that are frequently linked to the development of running injuries. By using video analysis we can replay the movement as many times as we need to and also provide feedback back to you on a 1:1 basis, showing and explaining to you what we have found. We will then give you with a copy of your video, along with annotations and tips on how to correct your biomechanics, which will help guide you through your rehabilitation.

How do I book in for an assessment?
